About the Museum

Our museum was born because one person longed for this.

This was a man who was not rich and did not have a professional art education. But the circumstances did not prevent him from collecting a collection of works of art, obtaining from city officials that a room was allocated for its existence, and attracting visitors who have a distant idea of what fine art is and why it is necessary. This person was a resident of Yekaterinodar Fedor Akimovich Kovalenko. He did not succeed in becoming an artist, but he realized his love of art through collecting works. At first it was small and inexpensive work, not always of good quality. Later it became possible to buy more serious works. As a result of correspondence with Italian artist Giuseppe Parrini, Kovalenko receives custom-made copies from the works of Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo. From St. Petersburg from the owners of art stores A.I. Trenti and R.D. Auer catalogs come in, according to which Kovalenko selects and acquires paintings by Russian and Western European artists.
Fedor Akimovich establishes ties with the Academy of Arts. I.E. Repin, V.D. Polenov and some other artists donated a number of paintings and engravings to the Yekaterinodar Art Gallery. From 1905 to 1916, exhibitions were held twice a year, in which graduates of the Imperial Academy of Arts, the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture participated, and later artists from Kiev, Kharkov, and Yekaterinodar.
On June 13, 1909, the Art Club at the City Art Gallery began its activities. The honorary chairman of the circle was elected I.E. Repin. Subsequently, the Art School was created on the basis of the circle.
Towards the end of life, the collection of F.A. Kovalenko totaled 730 paintings, 1400 works of graphics, arts and crafts, rare books.

history 01

The house that he built…

In the first years of its existence, the Ekaterinodar Art Gallery was located in the building of the City Council on the street. Red, history-02 but soon Kovalenko had to look for a new room. The City Government refused the previously provided premises, as it itself needed it. The question arose about the continued existence of the gallery.
Active attempts by Kovalenko to influence officials were successful: the City Duma agreed to pay the rent of a suitable room. It was impossible to build a special museum building in a short time, but soon a way out was found.Engineer Batyrbek Shardanov built in 1905 a luxurious mansion in the city center on the corner of Krasnaya and Grafskaya Streets. Kovalenko managed to agree with Shardanov on leasing the second floor of the building.

New owners

After the death of Kovalenko in 1919, the Yekaterinodar Art Gallery became part of the history-03 of the united Kuban-Black Sea Regional Museum. Fortunately, this period of functional restructuring was short-lived, and in 1924 a new inscription appeared above the main entrance of the Shardanov mansion: “Kuban Soviet Art Museum”. The change of name was reflected in the fate of the museum: it organically fit into the post-revolutionary reality.
The head of the museum from 1926 to 1931, Professor Romuald Kazimirovich Wojcik was actively engaged in the replenishment of collections, now on a scientific basis. Due to the high level of education, enterprise and personal relations with the staff of the Glavmuzey, the Museum of pictorial culture, the heads of the Tsvetkovskaya State Gallery, Voitsik was able to select first-class works, and soon the museum formed collections of Russian classical, Western European art, Japanese woodcut, and Russian avant-garde.
Wojcik was accused of anti-Soviet activity, for which he received ten years in the camps. The professor did not return to Krasnodar.

And there was a war

In 1942, Krasnodar was threatened by occupation. For the museum, this could have turned into a complete ruin, but history-04 managed to avoid it thanks to the foresight of the director A.K. Osipova and Senior Researcher M.P. Epiphany. For all the works, boxes were made in advance, an accurate plan was drawn up of what and where to place it, what is possible to put history-05 on. All preparations were carried out in the conditions of the strictest secrecy, since the higher leadership required not to create panic in the city.
When the evacuation order was received, a large number of works were collected in a matter of hours, loaded into wagons and transported by one of the last trains. Until 1944, the museum’s collection found a temporary shelter in Solikamsk.
When Krasnodar was liberated from the invaders, the museum returned to its hometown again. But Shardanov’s mansion was “occupied” this time by his own - various military headquarters. A separate feat of A.K. Osipova, then a 25-year-old girl, was the liberation of the museum, restoration of the exhibition, repair. The building was not significantly damaged, and soon people, despite the wartime, reached out to the museum.

 history 05

Once upon a time, there were…

In peacetime, the museum healed as usual. Exhibitions were held, funds were replenished with individual works or entire collections. In 1985, academician L.F. Ilyichev donated his collection of Russian painting of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In 1995, the museum received a number of graphic works from A.E. Glukhovtseva. In 2000 A.I. Slutsky presented the museum with an extensive collection of bookplate.
In 1993, the name of its founder, Fyodor Akimovich Kovalenko, was returned to the museum.
Since the beginning of the 90s, the avant-garde collection has become popular, carefully preserved by more than one generation of museum workers and waiting in the wings. Individual works take part in international exhibition projects:
«Great utopia». Germany, USA, 1992-1993
«Victory over the sun». International Biennale, France, 1993
«Berlin - Moscow». 1995-1996
«Russian avant-garde from the collections of Russian museums». Korea, Australia, Germany, Italy, etc.., 1995-1996
«Russian art 1910-1930» in a series «Golden map of Russia». Moscow, State Tretyakov Gallery, September 2000
«Amazons of the Russian avant-garde». USA, 2000

School of repair

By the 100th anniversary of the museum received a gift from the regional administration - the opportunity to carry out major repairs and restoration. As a result, arches were opened on the first floor of the Shardanov mansion. This caused a number of complaints, but in the end, the space became more modern and multivariate for exhibition solutions.
On the second floor, stucco molding was restored on the ceilings, the original color of the walls, parquet floors, fireplaces were restored, new chandeliers and curtains were ordered. The museum celebrated its centenary in the renovated building with an updated exhibition.

Entering a new dimension

Currently, the museum is developing not only the real world of history-07 (the building is being renovated on Krasnaya St. 15 to turn it into a fully-fledged museum), but also virtual. The information and educational center "Virtual Branch of the Russian Museum" has been opened.
The automated system “Super Ticket” has been introduced, which has greatly simplified the reporting system, and also allows for the printing of beautiful and history-08 original tickets for each exhibition.
Thanks to the participation of the museum in the large-scale program "Art Express", implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Krasnodar Territory and the Cultural Foundation "MIRASVET" (Astrakhan), the real exposition is complemented by virtual space using multi-touch touch systems and Museum of Dreams ";" Favorite paintings ";" My Museum. "
Especially for this, videos were filmed with the participation of museum researchers and residents of the city of Krasnodar.
Visitors will be able to see the interactive book “Chronicle of Museum Life. Pages of History ”, where the history of the museum and its collections is presented in an accessible and interesting way.
The museum, together with partners, is involved in several social projects. We are open to new ideas and innovative ways to implement them.
In April 2014, the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F. A. Kovalenko celebrates the 110th anniversary of its founding. To this date, a complex of anniversary events has been developed.
